How to Donate?

We all have good intentions when donating clothing or home goods. As well-meaning as it might be, it's important to consider the condition of what you're bringing to your local charity. If a shirt or shoes are worn beyond repair and you wouldn't wear them, chances are no one else will. If you give dirty, stained, or damaged items to a charity, they won’t be able to resell them and will likely go into the garbage.  Here are some suggestions for donating responsibly and reducing waste. Here’s a list of places to donate.

Clothing/Textiles

Wash items that are in good condition before you donate them.

Don’t donate underwear or socks unless they are new and still in the package.

Animal shelters often take used linens. Towels, sheets, and blankets can provide warmth and comfort and line kennels.

Look for clothing/textile take-back and recycling programs. Your items can be turned into other things.

Household Goods

Remember the following guidelines for donating items:

- Only donate items that are in good working condition.

- Non-working electronics should be recycled (most communities have recycling centers where you can drop old televisions and electronics.

- Call ahead to see if the charity can use your specific things.

- Consider donating to local shelters or organizations that directly serve those in need.

- Place an ad for your item on Freecycle, which is available in most communities. This way, you will find others who can use your unwanted item and repair or repurpose it.

By being mindful of the condition of the items we donate, we can ensure that our contributions have a positive impact. Let's work together to make a significant difference in our communities through responsible donations, knowing that each item we donate is a step towards a better world. Your actions matter and can bring about a positive change.
